Chimayó, New Mexico
El Santuario de Chimayó was built by the Spanish in 1813 and its dirt floors are rumoured to have healing properties. The location was place of worship long before the construction with different civilizations using it as a sanctuary. It attracts around 300,000 visitors a year which is hardly surprising given the fact that it is seen as the most important Catholic pilgrimage centre in the USA.
